My simulation story...
My journey began in August of 2009, I was a simulation advocate and early adopter and was asked by administration to be our simulation coordinator. This prompted me to complete a post doctoral certificate in Healthcare Simulation Education to immerse myself in the pedagogical aspects of simulation and organize, plan and implement a simulation program. I began seeking every opportunity to learn and become involved in simulation, attending conferences, participating in committees and volunteering for service positions. In January 2015, I was asked to merge two departments: Instructional Technology and our Learning Resource Center creating the Learning & Technology Resource Center (LTRC) and became the first Executive Director of the LTRC. A University article documents the event New UAH center consolidates use of simulators to train student nurses.

LTRC 3rd floor

The LTRC is located on the 3rd floor of the UAH College of Nursing and features a 10,615 square foot simulation center and learning laboratories. Within the LTRC, a mock hospital provides structure and on-demand clinical experiences using seven high-fidelity simulation laboratories with audio video management systems; seven collaboration stations for documentation, a Pyxis medication room, five medical surgical suites, one ICU suite, one home health laboratory, a four bed obstetric/pediatric suite and four telehealth robots. The center has a 16 bed assessment table laboratory, 16 bed hospital laboratory, a telehealth room and a large central supply room.

The center is staffed by an Executive Director, Healthcare Simulation Technician, a Learning Resource Center Specialist, a Director of Instructional Technology, Instructional Technology Specialist, 8-10 Graduate Teaching Assistants and ~10 student workers. Merging departments and building a center required vision, a curriculum integration plan, an operational plan, faculty training, peer mentoring & self assessment guidelines and a strategic plan. A brief overview of and a few examples of initial documents are shown below.
